Fear is an emotion that both humans and animals experience. It can be a powerful motivator to escape danger. We often see this in nature films, where impalas and other herd animals flee to avoid becoming dinner for a hungry lion. Caribou instinctively flee from wolf packs, sensing that it is not a good idea to stick around to see what these dogs are up to.
Fear motivates us too. We fear volcanic eruptions. Those who are not moved by fear may find out about the danger too late. Such was the case when Vesuvius erupted on August 24, 79 AD, spewing hot ash over the city of Pompeii and turning those who did not warn into statues depicting life in the debauched Roman city in the first century.
